Calcium Hydroxide

CALCIUM HYDROXIDE

Calcium Hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] is an inorganic compound with a colorless appearance in crystalline form and a white powdery appearance in solid form. It is commonly referred to as slaked lime. Submission to this compound in an unprotected environment can prove fatal to humans. This is an ionic compound with its other names as, quick lime, caustic lime, pickling lime, and hydrated lime, etc.

Physical Properties

Its appearance is a hexagonal white granule. It has a polymeric structure. It is difficult to solubilize in water and glycerol. On unprotected exposure, it can irritate the skin and eyes. It has an alkaline taste. It is a strong base as it forms an alkaline solution. Calcium Hydroxide is insoluble in alcohols and ethanol. It readily absorbs carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate.

Uses of Calcium Hydroxide

  • It operates as a pH modifier due to its basic properties.
  • It is used as an ingredient in many plastics.
  • This reacts with CO2 thus reactions called carbonation, and sugarcane is processed via carbonation.
  • In dental clinics, this compound is used to fill cavities of human teeth. However, the procedure is called a root canal.
  • It is used in hair care products.
  • It is also used in the manufacturing of ebonite and pesticides.
  • It is used in cement, plaster, and other paving materials.

Preparation

It is produced by the reaction of a solution of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide. It can simply be prepared by the reaction of calcium oxide with water.

Chemical Properties

  • It reacts with acids and water, to form salts.
  • It is not flammable.
  • It has a refractive index of 1.57 alpha, 1.54 beta.
  • Its vapor pressure is 0mmHg.
  • It is accelerated by the presence of water.
  • It has a prominent compressive strength.
  • It may act as a local buffer against acidic reactions.
