ALUMINIUM OXIDE

Aluminum Oxide (Al₂O₃) is an inorganic chemical compound that is the most common naturally occurring substance. It is an amphoteric compound. It has its other name as alumina, alundum, and aloxide. Its natural occurrence is in a crystalline form called corundum. It is also found naturally as Ruby’s, Sapphire, and emeralds. Aluminum Oxide has extensive uses in the industry and commercial side.

Uses of Aluminium Oxide

It operates as a chemical reagent in several chemical reactions.

• It is used in sunscreen as a common ingredient and other cosmetics like blush, nail paints and lipstick.
• It is used in water purification treatment.
• It works as a catalyst to speed up the chemical reaction.

Preparation

It is produced by the calcination of Gibbsite. It can be obtained if the leaching of bauxite with the caustic soda, followed by the precipitation by the hydrolysis and seeding of the solution.

• It reacts with acids and bases both as an amphoteric substance.
• It is very stable substance.
• It has a refractive index of 1.758
• It is not corrosive but does corrode.
