Desalination is an efficient and sustainable process that removes salts and minerals from saline water, particularly seawater, to make it suitable for human consumption, irrigation, and industrial applications. Currently, more than 20,000 desalination plants operate in over 170 countries, serving as an essential source of freshwater for agriculture, industrial boilers, and other critical applications.
The seawater desalination process begins with the extraction of ocean water, which is then subjected to pre-treatment filtration to eliminate larger impurities. Advanced membrane filtration technologies, such as reverse osmosis, are used to remove salts and other contaminants. Approximately half of the treated water is converted into fresh drinking water, addressing global water scarcity and supporting the increasing demand for clean water worldwide.
