Zinc Oxide

What is Zinc Oxide (ZnO)?

Zinc Oxide is a white, odorless, and insoluble inorganic compound with the chemical formula ZnO. It exists as a fine, white powder and is known for its excellent UV-blocking, antibacterial, and thermal stability properties. Zinc Oxide is not soluble in water, but it disperses well in oils and various suspensions, making it highly useful in both industrial and personal care applications.

Derived either synthetically or from natural zinc ore, ZnO is widely used in cosmetics, rubber, ceramics, coatings, electronics, and pharmaceuticals. It acts as a UV absorber, filler, pigment, and antimicrobial agent in various formulations.

USES AND APPLICATIONS

INDUSTRIES

Zinc Oxide is extensively used in:

  • Cosmetics & Personal Care (sunscreens, lotions, diaper rash creams)

  • Rubber Industry (as an activator in vulcanization)

  • Ceramics and Glass (whitening agent, glaze formulation)

  • Pharmaceuticals (topical ointments, antiseptic powders)

  • Paints & Coatings (UV protection, mildew resistance)

  • Textiles (UV-resistant fabric treatment)

  • Electronics (varistors, semiconductors, LEDs)

KEY ADVANTAGES

  • Excellent UV absorption and reflection

  • Non-toxic and skin-safe for topical use

  • Antibacterial and antifungal properties

  • Acts as a filler, pigment, and performance enhancer

  • Provides thermal and chemical stability in industrial processes
